Handmade fun...

Most of you know that I am one of the creative souls in my family. I like to make crafty meaningful things. The best gifts in my opinion are the ones that can be made...something you put your heart and soul into, something that represents not only the recipient, but you the giver. One of my challenges for next year is to make all of my gifts! It means I have to plan ahead, especially for the little ones in our lives...cause those are the hardest to pull together when all they want are REAL toys! But I am going to do my best. Here are two gifts I received this year that were handmade and meant ALOT!

The first is an original painting of our family's cabin given to me by Matt's Grandma Jeannette who is a painter. It was totally unexpected...and I teared up when I opened it. This is a very special place and holds an extremely dear spot in my heart. My father has already scanned it, enlarged it, and framed it to hang in their house...I know this will be a staple image that will remain very special to me and my family through the years.
The second was a cookbook that my mom made me. It contains not only photographs of my mom, family, grandparents and even the picture of the cake from her baby shower when she was expecting me...but she also included her very first cookbook that she recieved and the original recipe cards and pages from cookbooks/magazines of some of her favorite dishes she has made for us over the years. There is space to add my own...and I can't wait to pass this on to Sydney and her family some day.

A Christmas Story...

Christmas Morning...

Here are a few pics from Christmas morning...Syd received not one but two hippopotamuses for Christmas, she tired on dad's hunting hat, and showed off her new shoes and coat for the camera! We had a wonderful morning and are grateful for so many things this holiday season!

Santa...I'm not quite a fan just yet!

Sorry for the poor quality of the images here...they are quick scans of poorly printed pics to begin with...but we couldn't wait to share these classic 'first time' Santa shots with you. Sydney and Georgia visited the big jolly guy today and these turned out just how I imagined the probably would! Nothing beats the holiday season like paying money to have your kids sit on some strangers lap! PRICELESS!!!

19 Months

The Month has gone by fast as usual...Syd is quite the little hoot these days as you can see by the pic I chose to post. She will probably be a dress-up queen here sooner or later...or just have a very interesting way of wanting to dress herself! She is starting to talk more and more...most of the words you might not understand at first...but that is what parental interpreters are for...Matt and I would be happy to help make the words mesh with your brain cells the next time you have a chance to chat with her! The 'uhs', 'oohs' and 'ahhs' grunts and squeaks make sense...but the nice thing is that she is starting to try to say so many things. Which also means the repeating stage is closer than we really want! However that is also the fun part...hearing this little squeaky voice spit out something you thought she might not get on her first try!

Christmas is right around the corner and we can't wait to see how she does opening gifts. Last year she kind of figured it out, but now that she knows there is something under the paper or inside the bag...it will be a hoot to see her react...the problem will be keeping her from taking everyone else's since she is in quite the possessive stage.

She is on the go, go, go all day long...loves listening and dancing to silly songs, helping Mom & Dad around the house, loves the outdoors when it isn't frigid out and has an addiction for Sesame Street and pretty much any other show on PBS. Another month down...and many more months of silliness, tantrums, laughing, bumps & bruises, and new discoveries to come!

Michelle's Graduation

Friday night Wendy, Kelly & I drove to Manhattan to help celebrate Michelle's Graduation from the Master's program at K-State! Congrats again girly! We are all so proud of you!

Lodge at Big Cedar

Matt surprised me last week with a quick get away to the Big Cedar Lodge that sits on Table Rock Lake just outside of Branson, Missouri to celebrate our 10 Year Anniversary of being together and the upcoming Christmas Holiday! We had a great time! I loved this place and can't wait to go back. We rented a little cabin...and although it was cold, it was great to get away and spend some time together!

The 'death' of another tree...

In preparation for the upcoming holiday, the humans woke early, added additional layers of marshmallow looking clothing, drove north away from the city and battled the frigid windy weather of the mid-west in search of yet another x-mas tree ... that in just a short few weeks will go live with the fishes in Shawnee Mission Park's Lake.

Tis the Season!

On another note...this year the ornaments will not have to endure or live in fear of the smallest human creature's torture. They will remain securely packaged in their boxes safe and sound! And LED Christmas lights are super kid friendly...ours are big and bright and don't get hot...so the tree torturer can admire them all she wants!

How old did you say he is?

We celebrated Chad's 40th Birthday Friday evening!

Hunting Bambi...

Matt went deer hunting for the first time with his friend Mike this last week. It was cold, windy, and neither one of them had any luck. Seems Bambi was spared this time however Bambi's mother should now be on the look out when they make another attempt in January.

10 Years Ago Today...

"Well, you know, new love is really fantastic, but love realized is even better..." - Stephenie Meyer

Ten years ago today...my life began.

Okay, for those literal folk, maybe not the beginning of my 'life'...but my life with Matt. Yeah, I know, Matt and I haven't been married 10 years...I am not purposely trying to confuse anyone here. But I don't celebrate nor view my wedding anniversary like I celebrate the anniversary of when we found each other in this ridiculously crazy world we all live in! Sure, our wedding is what made it official on paper and to those around us...but we had 3.5 wonderful years leading up to that day, and for me...that is when this journey actually began...that is the day I don't forget. The detailed story might seem cheesy to anyone but us...aren't most people's...but that story is what brought us together. And that story continues to be written. Now for the realists...the past ten years have definitely had their ups and downs...Matt and I could both give you some great stories and tips on just how hard/easy marriage and relationships can be...but without those ups and downs our relationship would never have grown. We continue to learn new things about each other all the time...some of those things we love, some make us happy, some irritate the hell out of us for a bit, and some of them we wonder what hole they crawled out of and just how soon they will be crawling back in curling up and hibernating for the rest of the journey! But you get over it...and when you look across the room at the person you know you can't live without ten years later and your heart can still flutter...than those things disappear for that brief moment and you realize just how good life is...and just how much you can still love each other even ten years into the journey.

So to my best friend - my confidant - my husband - my constant...you will never know just how much I love you...words will never tell you enough, I will never be able to show you enough...but I do...more than anything else in this world...and now I have shouted it from the internet...that's right...I LOVE YOU! Thank you for ten years filled with happiness, sadness, anger, communication or lack there of ;) admiration, gratitude, big purchases, support, irritation, adventures, smiles, laughs, kisses, hugs, winks, advice, comfort, birth, friendship, drunk dials, randomness, forgetfulness, parenthood...and the alcohol and coffee we washed it all down with! I look forward to more than another ten years!

“A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’ comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.” ―Dave Meurer

18 Months

18 Months...where does the time go? Let's sum it up...in the last month Sydney... Still laughs with her contagious laugh ALOT - Loves watching Sesame Street - Likes her Books the MOST - Attempts dressing herself...but is better at undressing herself - Likes raking up and playing in the Fall Leaves - Knows where her Nose/Eyes/Ears/Chin/Teeth/Mouth/Tongue/Hair/Hands/Fingers/Toes/Legs/Bottom/Belly are - Loves to hear herself Squeal or Scream to get our attention - Climbs on EVERYTHING - Gets coaxed to bed every night with, "You want to brush you teeth?"...and then proceeds to RUN to the bathroom, pull her stool in front of the sink, and reach for the toothpaste - Holds up one finger above her head when asked how old she is - Says her dogs names as "O-dy" (Cody) and "i-ee" (Riley) - Knows animal noises for Cat/Dog/Horse/Lamb/Cow/Monkey/Elephant - She is still a picky eater - Likes to steal pens and draw on things - Still wont keep a clip in her hair for very long - Sleeps through the night - Takes good naps - Like taking adventure walks down the street...and collects every stick in sight - Is a waterbaby and leaves more water on the bathroom floor than in the tub - Shakes her booty to music - Learning to recognize JAYHAWKS only - Got dressed up a Troll for Halloween with a little inspiration from Mom...and the 1990's Treasure Trolls.

We had her 18 month checkup on Monday...she was loaded up with the usual 18 month shots, her flu and H1N1. She is weighing in at 22lbs and grew 3 inches since her 12 month checkup. We are working with her everyday as she continues to explore this crazy world! Thanksgiving and Christmas will be extra special this year as she begins to understand things more!
